A Memorable Day at the Tower Theater: Honoring Celia Cruz and the Spirit of Cuban Danzón

Recently, I had the incredible pleasure of visiting the historic Tower Theater on Calle Ocho in Miami — a true cultural landmark that has stood proudly since 1926. Known as one of Miami's oldest cultural venues, the Tower Theater has long been a gathering place where the Cuban-American experience has been celebrated through art, film, and music. As I walked through its timeless doors, I felt the deep-rooted spirit of history and tradition come alive once again.

On this special day, we were attending an event presented by the Café con Leche TV Show and the Miami Virtual Museum: A Tour Through The History of Cuba film exposition. I was honored to have been invited alongside Dr. Glenda Mujer Esperanza, PhD, to represent and showcase our beloved Cuban dance traditions. Dressed in traditional white Cuban Danzón attire, Dr. Glenda and I greeted guests with graceful Danzón steps, setting the tone for a cultural journey that paid homage to our roots. Later, we performed traditional dances including the elegant Danzón, the spirited Habanera, and the vibrant Contradanza, engaging warmly with the guests and breathing life into the rhythms of old Cuba.

One of the highlights of the day was experiencing the Tower Theater's stunning Celia Cruz Exhibit. Although the exhibit had recently concluded its two-year run, many beautiful memories and artifacts were still vividly celebrated within its halls. Celia Cruz, "La Reina de la Salsa," left an indelible mark on the world, and walking through her story was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The exhibit showcased rare photos, sparkling costumes, personal memorabilia, and moving audiovisual displays that captured the electrifying essence of Celia's spirit. Her journey from humble beginnings in Havana to becoming a global icon was beautifully chronicled, reminding us all of the power of music, resilience, and cultural pride.

I took a few photos during our visit, capturing the joy and reverence of the moment — standing beside images and memorabilia honoring Celia Cruz, immersed in the living legacy of Cuban music and dance. Being there felt like a full-circle celebration: honoring our musical legends while showcasing the timeless dances that define our cultural soul.

This experience is also a beautiful reminder of why I am so passionate about Ritmo! Danzón (www.ritmodanzon.com), a project dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich tradition of Danzón and other foundational Cuban dances. Through Ritmo! Danzón, we strive to keep the elegance, history, and spirit of these traditional dances alive, sharing them with new generations and ensuring they remain a vibrant part of our cultural fabric.

The Tower Theater continues to be a beacon for Cuban culture in Miami, and visiting it on such a meaningful day — honoring Celia Cruz, celebrating Cuban heritage, and dancing Danzón with dear friends — was truly unforgettable. I am deeply grateful for the invitation and for the opportunity to continue sharing the magic of our music and dance traditions with the world.
