Who Was José Martí?

No discussion of Cuban heritage is complete without mentioning José Martí (1853–1895), a poet, journalist, and revolutionary leader who fought for Cuba’s independence from Spain. Known as the Apostle of Cuban Independence, Martí’s writings and speeches inspired generations. His famous poem Versos Sencillos later became the lyrics for the beloved song "Guantanamera."
