Two Exciting Components in One Event

1. Interactive Educational Dance Workshop

Guests begin by taking a fascinating journey through the history and evolution of Cuban social dance traditions—from the early 1800s to the present day. Participants learn authentic dance movements step-by-step while discovering how Cuban music and dance evolved over two centuries.

The Cuban Creole Contradanza

The workshop begins with the Cuban Creole contradanza featuring the musical composition Los Ojos de Pepa by Miguel Saumell Robredo.

The Cuban contradanza emerged during the 19th century as European dance traditions blended with Afro-Cuban rhythmic influences in Cuba. Elegant yet lively, the contradanza became one of the earliest expressions of a uniquely Cuban musical identity and laid the foundation for many later Cuban dance styles.

The Habanera

Next, participants experience the famous habanera tradition featuring La Paloma composed by Sebastián Iradier.

The habanera became internationally recognized as one of Cuba’s most influential musical styles. Known for its graceful rhythm and romantic character, the habanera spread throughout Europe and the Americas, influencing classical music, opera, jazz, and Latin dance traditions around the world.

The Classic Cuban Danzón

Finally, guests learn the elegant steps of the classic Cuban danzón featuring Las Alturas de Simpson, composed in 1879 by Miguel Faílde Pérez.

The danzón is considered Cuba’s official national dance and is celebrated for its sophistication, poise, and musicality. Couples learn graceful coordinated movements while developing timing, balance, rhythm, concentration, and teamwork.

2. The Grand Finale: The RITMO! Danzón Dance Contest

After practicing the danzón steps together, the energy builds toward the exciting grand finale—the interactive dance contest.

Who Will Become the King and Queen of the Danzón?

Volunteer judges selected from the audience will choose the winning dance couples based on rhythm, coordination, elegance, teamwork, and enthusiasm. The client provides the prizes for the winners, including:

  • 1st Place Prize

  • Optional 2nd Place Prize

  • Optional 3rd Place Prize

Of course, no one is expected to become a perfect dancer in one evening. That is part of the fun. The challenge itself encourages participants to focus, coordinate, laugh, learn, and support one another while striving toward graceful movement and teamwork.

The result is an uplifting experience filled with joy, encouragement, audience interaction, and unforgettable memories.
